Today I have such a special post to share with you. One of my health coaching clients, Sarah from Creating a Better Tomorrow is sharing her experience working with me. If you haven’t checked out Sarah’s blog, I suggest you do if you are in the market for some inspiration, motivation and a whole lot of cute with her eleven month-old twin boys. Sarah and I ‘met’ through our blogs while we were both pregnant and we followed one another and have celebrated the birth of our boys and connected on so many levels; mainly food and being a stay at home mom.
Sarah contacted me one day and asked about health coaching. As she shares below, though she is a very strong, smart and driven woman, we all have our challenges. And really that is what Health Coaching is about; working past your personal roadblocks to unleash your personal best. For some people that is a struggle with weight, stress or for Sarah, a former eating disorder that was bringing back negative feelings with the stress of trying to juggle it all.
I cannot thank Sarah enough for being so open, honest and giving. Her interview is really beautiful and even brought me to tears. If nothing else, I hope this post inspires you and leaves you with the peace of mind that we all struggle with something in life and it is strength, not weakness, to ask for help and guidance.
- What did you think a health coach did and was about before working with Brynn? In what ways were you right and wrong?
Is it crazy to admit that I wasn’t quite sure what a health coach did…I mean I had an idea this idea that a health coach would help me mentally, physically, and spiritually but I honestly never thought through just what a health coach truly did on their end. I knew going into this that I loved Brynn’s attitude, her perspective, and for me it was important that she was a mom. I wanted someone that I could be TOTALLY transparent with and honest about my struggles both physically and mentally.
I was right that a health coach would help and strengthen my mind, body, and spirit but where I went wrong was in the HOW Brynn worked with me. You see I sought Brynn out thinking I needed a bit more help just getting over some old eating disorder habits and thought processes but Brynn barely touched on eating instead she pushed me in other areas of my life that were deeper than disordered eating. Brynn made me stretch outside my comfort zone in other aspects but it all tied back into my eating. AND the best part at the end of our sessions I felt so much more empowered for whatever came my way
- What helped you make the decision to reach out to Brynn?
I had followed Brynn for quite some time on her blog. Not sure how I stumbled upon her but I knew instantly that we’d be good friends if we lived closer (actually I think now we are friends for sure after this coaching session). I love how she is ‘real’ but upbeat, positive, and her description of her coaching work got me…she knew just how to describe what I needed! I honestly was scared to reach out to her. Since I have my own health and wellness blog and help with online personal training I was scared that others might judge, but nope we all need coaches – business coaches, health coaches, personal trainers…we are all striving to improve!
- What were your fears?
As I mentioned above I was mostly scared of the perception if others found out I was working with a health coach. But then I realized that many others probably have this same fear…so I took the big leap and said if I’m going to do this I’m going to share it with the blogging world. I want others to know just what a health coach does and can do for anyone.
- What were your hopes? Were you looking to accomplish anything, set goals?
From the beginning I thought Brynn would help me with some lingering disordered eating thoughts and just anxiety with being a new mom and doing ‘it all.’ I didn’t set goals really because I wanted to enjoy the experience…I didn’t have a clue what I was in for on my first call so I had no preset goals but as I worked with Brynn we did come up with homework to complete over a course of two weeks and those often resulted in more specific goals but to my surprise none of them revolved (or very little) around food. My hopes were to focus on eating…Brynn’s plan? quite different. She went deeper into what I really needed to work on…my inner strength.
- What is something that surprised you about Health Coaching?
How fun it was!!! I didn’t think that working with Brynn would be so much fun and turn into almost a crazy amazing friendship. Seriously each time we chatted I got excited to see it on my calendar the night before. I knew when I talked to Brynn I could be totally open, totally vulnerable and she wouldn’t judge. And to my surprise she could often relate to some of my own inner conflicts. I thought from the start that it would be more serious and more rigid…but turns out it was fun!
- How would you describe Health Coaching and your experience?
This is a tricky one! I don’t think I can define what health coaching is for everyone because the beauty behind Brynn is she got to know me, she got me talking, she dug deep and I feel my experience won’t be like anyone else’s. No one else can be exactly the same as me or have the exact same sticking points mentally and physically. And I think that is the way I would describe…totally individualized mental, physical, and spiritual strengthening. Brynn worked with me to delve into thoughts deeper, to taste food longer, to be ‘bad’ and not always say yes…and the best part was knowing it wasn’t a canned program that Brynn really thought through our conversations and made them about me.
- Who should work with a Health Coach?
Are you ready for this? I think EVERYONE should. I think every single person has areas that they can improve and strengthen. Health coaches don’t have to be used just when you have ‘issues’ health coaches like Brynn help you focus on enjoying life, savoring moments, living your best life…and doesn’t everyone want to do that?
