I want to tell you about Mitch’s birthday weekend. He turned THREE years old on Saturday and we threw him a party with a bunch of his toddler buddies, family and friend and enough cake and entertainment to last for days.
We decided earlier this year once we found out we are expecting, that we wanted to throw Mitch a birthday party all about him and his favorite things. And right now that includes Thomas the Train, sweets, jumping and his friends. So, it was easy to plan a party around his favorites! I landed on a Thomas the Train theme and went from there.
Phil and I took Friday off of work to prep for the party that was planned on Saturday, Mitch’s birthday, and started at 11:30 am. We knew the day would move fast, so we did as much prep as possible Friday. Once the bounce house arrived around 5 pm, the party officially started! Mitch came home from school and was over the moon to see the huge inflatable in his backyard. I have to say, we were not anticipating the bounce house being quite so large, but it kept everyone happy for three days! Our family came over for pizza and bouncing for a few hours Friday night.
Saturday was Mitch’s birthday and a total whirlwind of a day. It was fun but busy and by the end of the day I found myself feeling overly emotional about, well, just about everything.
The morning began with a special breakfast that the three of us enjoyed followed by a birthday dance party!
My parents stayed with us and once they were up jumped in to help us with the final set up, prep and playing with Mitch. Thanks to a lot of prep and catering, the party came together quickly.
When we first decided on the Thomas theme, I saw a picture for a Thomas made of cardboard boxes. Phil thought the idea was fantastic, and thanks to the house work we’ve been doing, had plenty of material on hand. For a month, Phil would work in the garage after Mitch went to bed painting, measuring and cutting to make the perfect Thomas, Annie and Clarabell. The trains added a perfect activity and amazing visual to the party. Phil did such an amazing job and I love how he spent so much time making the trains and custom signs for Mitchell.
By time the party started we were ready to roll. All of the kids immediately ran to the bounce house and spent a majority of the party bouncing and sliding. The weather was perfect hovering in the high sixties with full sun, which kept everyone warm and enjoying our first fall-like day.
One of the highlights was the cake. I worked with our favorite local bakery for a few weeks deciding the size and design of the cake and could not be more thrilled with the end result. Mitch had the hardest time being patient for cake time to come around. From the moment he laid eyes on the cake and the trains, he tried every trick in the book to get his hands on the treat.
Everyone gathered around and we sang Mitch happy birthday and he blew out his three candles.
It was finally time to snag the trains and dig into the cake. And let me say, that was one delicious cake!
Due to the timing of the party, Mitch skipped his nap, which led to a bit of a wild afternoon. He spent most of the afternoon taking laps with his friends up and down the slide.
Around 4 pm our guests departed and we spent some time with our immediate family chatting away.
(this picture cracks me up, can you spot Everett’s orange shirt on the right side?!)
It came as no surprise that Mitch went down to bed quickly and easily. Phil, my dad and mom and I all sat down and absolutely crashed from the fun of the day. The entire house was lights out before 10 pm. A rarity, especially with the month we’ve had!
It was a relaxing morning with our family on Sunday which was the perfect way to start the day. We all slept in and then spent the morning opening Phil and my gifts to Mitch. We knew how much he wanted the train shed from the Brio collection, so we were anxiously awaiting gifting it to him for weeks.
And the excitement was exactly what we expected. Mitch begged to open the shed and we spent the next two hours playing and digging into pancakes in our pajamas – it was a perfect morning.
Our time with the bounce house was limited, so my sister, brother in law, niece, nephews and sister in law came over to the house for a few more jumps!
The kids were running on fumes, but were determined to jump for as long as possible. The rental company came at 2 pm and we all refueled before saying our goodbyes to all of our family. We were so grateful for everyone who came to celebrate Mitch and our family who drove hours to be with us.
Mitch quickly fell asleep and I took the time to pick up a few items and then soon found my way to the couch for some rest. The weekend wrapped with a quiet dinner at home and more time playing with the new trains and gifts.
Mitch has given me so much and is such a wonderful little person. The love I have for him is so intense and all-encompassing and I am so glad we celebrated him in all of his favorite ways.
Mitch made me a mother which quickly became my absolute favorite thing in the entire world. The past three years have flown by and have been the best years of my life, and that’s all because of Mitch, Phil and Henry and the life we have together. I used to read about moms crying when they dropped their kids off at school for the first time and not really get it at all… But now I do. I totally do. It sounds dramatic and ridiculous to say and embarrassing to type, but I know I won’t get the baby and toddler years with Mitch back. I know this is the time in his life when I’ll know more about him than anyone else in the world and it’s the time in his life when he needs us more than anyone and knowing that will change (and it should!) is sometimes a hard pill to swallow because I love my days with him so darn much.
In the same breath, I am so excited to watch him grow, change, learn, love, laugh and explore as he grows up. I know challenges await – they do at every stage – but I hope I can remember the way I felt when I found myself crying on Mitch’s birthday when they do. He is the absolute light of my life and has brought more to me then I ever realized was possible in this life.
I hope you guys had a great weekend and I hope to be back to share another blog post again soon. Have a great one!
