It was a cold, snowy, lovely, and wonderful weekend for the Gusters! Valentine’s seemed to bring out the best in all of us…either that or we are finally all feeling better. Either way, I’ll take it. We soaked up the day to the fullest and filled it with so much sweetness.

So, Valentine’s Day and me, we go back…about eight years ago to be exact.
At the time I lived in Ohio and had a great position at General Motors. I moved down to the small town (we are talking one stop light) two months prior and I literally knew no one.
Along came V-day and with it a huge nasty snow storm. We got so much snow that it inched up the door until I was officially snowed in. And no, I did not own a shovel.
Not knowing what to do, I called the one person I knew in town, Phil, a guy I had met just four weeks prior. He was rotating locations with GM and Ohio was one of his stops. I gave him a call and he answered, “Hi! Happy Valentine’s Day!” I was taken back, didn’t he know there was a HUGE snow storm? Let’s be mad and complain and wine about having to find a way into work. But instead, he answered with the happiest greeting I have heard yet to date. I was so taken back that I fumbled, wished him the same and asked where he was. He had made it into work (I still don’t know how) and offered to come help dig me out of my house.
Within 20 minutes I looked out my window and saw his truck barreling through the snow tossing it to the side (looking much like a commercial GM would pay big bucks for). He pulled up, charmed one of my neighbors into borrowing their shovel, dug me out and drove me into work.
I think it was that day, Valentine’s eight years ago, we knew there was something more than a friendship between us. OK, a little snag, he had a girlfriend. So we continued being friends until two weeks later he came over to hang out and said he broke it off with her and wanted to take me out on a date.
^one day before he put a ring on it in sin city
A year later we were engaged.
A year after that we were married.
Eight years later we shared donuts, homemade cards and a snugly morning in bed with our beautiful son.
^a sweet start to the day.
I was treated to a day of my favorites, including my boys, coffee, a few goodies and a mani/pedi followed by an early dinner date. When Phil asked me a few weeks back what I wanted for Valentine’s I said “a nice day.” And that I got, and then some.
It seems like a lifetime ago that I saw that truck driving down the road coming to rescue me, but on Valentine’s Day those memories and feelings are so fresh. I never could have imagined the wonderful life that was awaiting me just by calling a boy to say hi on Valentine’s.
