Hello from snowy Michigan! After a slow start to the month, Mother Nature made up for the lack of snow this weekend in a major way. Fortunately, all of our plans were scheduled for Saturday, so when the lake effect snow moved in late that night, we were all tucked away in our beds and woke up to a stunning sight!
The weekend started on a high when Phil arrived home after a week away for a work event. We were all over the moon to see him – it is hard to say who was the most excited. Nothing wrong with arriving home to a house full of love, hugs and homemade chicken fingers.
With a busy afternoon ahead, we eased into Saturday with a slow morning around the house. Mitch and Phil ran around the house while I tackled some cleaning. I always feel a burst of energy to clean around the holidays, which is odd, but I am assuming has to do with the year winding down and knowing more toys/clothes/stuff will be coming in!
We all cleaned up and parted ways: Phil and Mitch attended a Christmas lunch with his extended family and I joined my girlfriend for lunch.
It wouldn’t be a weekend post without my standard visit to Plum Market. It’s bordering on an obsession. Gah! We hit up the hot and cold bar for lunch and then caught up in the cafe.
It was such a fun and relaxing hour. Before leaving, I grabbed a few groceries and headed out ready for the week.
With a clear afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a manicure at my favorite salon across town. When I lived in Royal Oak, I found a great nail salon that has a wall of nail polish colors to select from and does a fantastic job at a great price. But since we moved, the 30-minute drive is too much, especially over the last few years with Mitch.
Knowing I had the rest of the afternoon to myself, I was at a bit of a loss of what to do with my time. It made me stop and think: What do I like to do with my time? My time, not as a mom, not as a wife, friend, sister, daughter, but just for me. The answer was simple, sit at a coffee shop, relax, read and sip on a latte. So I did just that.
Atomic Coffee moved into downtown Royal Oak recently and I was dying to try after reading great reviews and hearing their products were all made in house.
The shop is modern, yet inviting and I was instantly greeted by a sweet barista who gave me a quick run-down of the menu. After hearing they make their syrups in-house with organic products, I instantly ordered a lavender latte. And let me tell you, it was heavenly.
Also heavenly, sitting in a coffee shop with a good book with nothing to do but relax. I actually had a moment when I thought, “Hum, this feels familiar.” It’s been so long since I allowed myself to relax and disconnect. If anyone watches Life in Pieces and saw this week’s episode with Jen meditating, you relate.
Side note, Jen is totally my spirit animal. I adore her so, so much!
The boys arrived home just before Mitch’s bedtime and with the addition of a full day playing with family, he was spent. We scarfed down dinner, had bath time and then settled in ourselves for a few shows on the DVR before calling it a night.
Waking up on Sunday morning was like being inside of a snow globe – the first snow of the season had arrived and as far as the eye could see was covered in a blanket of soft, white snow as the flakes swirled in the air. We all crept downstairs in a sleepy state and made a game plan knowing the accumulation was going to continue and increase through the day. I changed and quickly took off for a workout and then made a stop at Starbucks for supplies.
When I arrived home, the house was filled with amazing scents and noise. Mitch discovered dancing Santa and his love was rekindled. Meanwhile, Phil was whipping up a large brunch. It was a sight to behold!
We all dug in! The picture above cracks me up – my toast and blueberries are missing as they’re currently Mitch’s favorite parts of the breakfast.
Once we were full, it was time to decorate the Christmas tree. I usually do the majority of the decorating, but was hoping to spend a few minutes as a family trimming the tree. And that is exactly what I got.
A few minutes.
Mitch was near nap time, so we hung a few ornaments together and then I finished decorating during his nap.
The rest of the day was spent enjoying a salmon dinner, making ginger bread houses and watching Frozen. Very appropriate.
And now we’re starting into the final full week of work before the holiday!
How much snow do you have? Favorite nail polish color?
